I don't know about 1971, but in 1966 I got an MGB on what was called "European delivery". You could pick it up at the factory or have it shipped direct. It came with British plates, black/silver...

Rob, I am not to sure about the current British regulations but I am pretty sure all British manufactured autos left the factory with plates that stay with the car for the life of the vehicle. Maybe...
